Welcome to My Midlife Plot Twist
Hi, I’m Cam— 45, mid-divorce, and apparently starring in the rom-com/dramedy nobody asked for but here we are. I left behind my house, most of my stuff, the man I thought I’d be with forever, and heartbreakingly, my two cats, Marbles and Spec (my ex got custody — yes, I cried ugly tears). What I did keep? My two dogs, Odin and Freya — fresh out of a month-long stint in “doggy prison” — my espresso maker (priorities), and just enough stubborn sparkle to buy a truck and a travel trailer. Because if life’s gonna fall apart, might as well rebuild it with wheels.
Some days I swear I’ve completely lost it. Other days, I catch a quiet sunset with coffee in hand and think, Okay, maybe this is exactly where I’m supposed to be. The grief is still there, but so is the joy — and this messy little adventure is slowly stitching me back together.
I’ve gone from not knowing which end of a screwdriver to hold, to drilling holes in countertops like I belong on HGTV. And no, I didn’t get there alone — with the help of my family, friends, and countless YouTube tutorials (shout-out to my Canadian RV guardian angel/friend and to the DIY pro’s of the internet), I’m learning how to fix, build, and actually use tools without breaking everything in sight. I’m also learning how to literally drive a house (10/10 do not recommend in Houston traffic). And let’s not even talk about my maiden voyage on I-45 where I cruised a bold five miles under the speed limit — pretty sure half of Texas wanted me arrested.
Meanwhile, I’m juggling side quests: rehabbing two spoiled “ex-cons,” figuring out why my toilet smells like it has a vendetta, trying to eat healthier (while still loving snacks), drop a few pounds, and will my job to be fully remote so I can chase my lifelong dream — traveling the U.S. and Canada to explore every state and national park I can roll this RV into. Basically, I’m running on coffee, chaos, and pure “I’ll figure it out” energy.
And why am I blogging about all this? Because my therapist told me to. Seriously. He said writing it down would help me process everything, remember the journey, and maybe even learn something from it. (So if this blog turns into a memoir or a Netflix series, we can all thank him.)
This blog, Brave Roads & Messy Days: An RV Chronicle by the Bougie Queen, is my space to share the wins, the fails, and all the hilarious in-betweens. It’s not the polished influencer RV life — it’s the real one: messy, scary, funny, sometimes ridiculous, but always mine.
So buckle up, buttercup — because this midlife plot twist is just getting started. Here’s to brave roads, messy days, dog hair on everything, and building a brand-new life with a little grit, a little glitter, and a whole lot of coffee.
